Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 9:00 PM - Sunday, November 01, 2009 at 3:00 AM (ET)
Update: 700+ people have RSVP'd. We're full. Tickets will NOT be available at the door :(
COSTUMES ARE 1000% REQUIRED.
Who:
DC's Creative and Technology communities - coming together for a first time in mass to meet, find collaborators and show off their skills. If you push pixels, sling code, trickle paint, create content or belt out beats this is for you. Okay even if you don't do that stuff - if you're kinda awesome this is where you want to be.
What:
Halloween is the best holiday on Earth, so we’re going to steal an undisclosed location taking over Local 16 (both floors including the roof) for ~800 people to get spooky-creative in on Saturday, October 31st from 9pm until we run out of dry ice. Don’t come to get wasted – come to get inspired – but um...there will be plenty of drinks at the open bar for sure.
Drinks:
Consider techARTS a human mashup experiment. We're going to provide the venue, music (submit & vote for performers here) and blank slate for you to do the following:
Bands & DJ's:
Meistro (Dirty Bombs, Sol Power)
soundcloud.com/meistro
myspace.com/djmeistro
Bio:
Known for destroying dance floors with a diverse mix of house, disco, funk, dancehall, and hip hop, there is no such thing as a typical Meistro DJ-set. He touches on all genres with depth and seems to always drop that track you forgot you loved.
His party-rocking abilities have brought him to Tel Aviv, NYC, Los Angeles, and many places in between and he has been featured in Spin Magazine, UK Hip Hop Connection, The Washington Post, Washington City Paper, and more. He has shared the stage with DJ Z-Trip, Karizma, Basement Boys, Toots and the Maytals, Max Glazer, Tittsworth, Kid Koala, and many others. And don't forget his mixes--his renowned reggae mix cds have sold out quickly online and in stores and many other mixes available as free downloads have received international praise.
Deep Sang (Dirty Bombs/The Affair)
www.deepsang.com
Known for rocking crowds from coast to coast with his signature blend of disco, hip hop, house and more, Deep Sang has quickly established himself as a mainstay of DC nightlife since moving there in 2005. His parties and mixtapes have received critical acclaim from the Washington Post, Turntable Lab and SoulStrut, among others.
DJ Pete Glow
Pete Glow’s introduction to the inner workings of DJing was a virtual ongoing master class taught by the legends of house music. Getting started as a journalist in high school, he interviewed the likes of Sasha and Digweed, Deep Dish, Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Calvin Harris, Junior Vasquez and Pete Tong over the following decade and paid close attention to what buttons they pushed and knobs they turned in the DJ booth. The DJ bug bit him, and years of occasional gigs inspired him to commit more seriously to making helping the kids dance as hard as possible. Pete is currently the Saturday night resident at Halo and has played a number of DC’s premier venues, including The Park at Fourteenth, Napoleon, Town Danceboutique and the legendary former warehouse superclub Nation. A lover of all genres of dance music, his setlist varies wildly according to where and for whom he’s playing. For techARTS, expect a blend of cutting-edge electro to complement the tech innovation at the heart of the event, along with classic house elements and even the odd well-done pop song.
DJs/VJs/Laser Graffiti?: + 88 and X Culture will be curating a multi-media showcase of digital art. Included in the night's festivities will be a live graphic design showcase; Visual projections, utilizing original flash animations and vector drawings ; installation art and an interactive laser graffiti device that lets YOU draw on walls using a high powered laser, open-source software, video camera and projector. Throughout the evening 4 DJs will bump our big sound system to make sure that you're bodies will be rockin' all night long.
TechArts Awards:
Our techARTS awards voting system got bombed by spam so we're scratching this for now :/
When:
Saturday, October 31th, 2009 from 9pm to 3am
Where:
Local 16 - we're taking over both floors including the roof!
Why:
TechArts is an un-entity…not a company/non-profit, or anything resembling a structured organization. We’re a collective focused on uniting the technology and creative communities in the greater DC region for the purpose of building a stronger culture of innovation.
We think random happenings, parties, un-conference and other loose/semi-chaotic experiences are the way to give people a way to converge and explore mashing up their talents.
